Week 4 - Medicine + Technology + Art
I really enjoyed learning about the effect that medicine has on technology during this weeks lessons. "The arts help make medical students become more thoughtful and listen carefully to a patient's narrative of his/her symptoms"(Hajar). Art has a strong positive impact on the medical field.
An experience that I have encountered that relates to medical technology is precision medicine, where medical treatment is personalized for an individuals specific needs. Growing up with severe peanut allergies, I was constantly given allergy skin tests."During allergy skin tests, the skin is exposed to suspected allergy-causing substances, called allergens, and then checked for signs of an allergic reaction"(Mayo Clinic Staff). These tests helped specialize what specific allergies I had, so that I could be prescribed a more individualized medication.
It helped show that my peanut allergy had gotten a lot less severe. I was prescribed a medication that was not as strong. I was worried that I would be prescribed with "Palforzia," which is "approved for use in patients with a confirmed diagnosis of peanut allergy"(US Food and Drug). It is known to be a much stronger drug and I like to avoid the harder medications.
Artists are able to harness genetic connections through their art. "Allergies are often hereditary"(Allergist). My mom had a peanut allergy growing up, so it makes total sense that I have one as well. Emily Watson creates artwork that relates to things such as DNA and cells. These types of works help break down the complicated side of medicine and science to patients who may want more information. "Art can be used as a means of storytelling and self-expression"(Corriel). Art has the ability to educate and deepen the meaning behind the medical field.

Hello Emon, I thought your blog was an interesting read and your own personal experience was a great example. I do believe that MedTech and Art can go hand-in-hand with one another in many ways. An example that comes to my mind is the use of neurological imaging as a form of art. I have seen people draw brains and neuroimages from pictures from fMRI, CT Scans, and more. I feel as time goes on, there will be more expansion and ideas for MedTech and Art.
