Week 3: Robotics + Art
Industrialization is a vital part of modern society. It has helped the economy to develop, along with rapid advancements in infrastructure and technology in society. "Architecture has never been idle. Its history is more ancient than that of any other art, and its claim to being a living force has significance in every attempt to comprehend the relationship of the masses to art" (Walter 5). This passage highlights the importance of architecture in society, which was ultimately formed through industrialization. "The advent of industrial development revamped patterns of human settlement, labor, and family life"(National Geographic). This passage helps explain that industrialization was strongly effected by the type of people, and the location of these industries.
I chose to write on the film, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." The movie involves a boy who wins a tour of a chocolate factory consisting of lots of high tech machinery. The chocolate factory is famously known around the world and brings joy to everyone."This evades the controversy surrounding the Industrial Revolution and its creation of a factory class of citizens, not to mention its other consequences such as urbanization"(The Human Fiction). This excerpt highlights the importance of industrialization in cities like where Charlie lived in because the factory served as a hub in industrial activity, bringing people in from other places.
A con of the factory is that people view it as robots working, and that can make everything less exciting. "Worker safety and wages were less important"(Rafferty). When technology improves rapidly, like how it is built up in the film, jobs are lost and workers wages are less important to the higher ups. "Poor working conditions and very low wages were two major social problems created by industrialization"(Hill 2). This film helps display that industrialization is usually known to have positive impacts on society, but can also have negative ones like this.

I really enjoyed your blog post. I specifically loved how you relate this topic to "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory". When I saw this film, it was the first time I really heard about the idea of robots stealing people's jobs and "taking over the world". I thought you related this idea about robots to the topic of robotics and art very well. I also like how you discussed the architecture side of the topic. I didn't really dive deep into that side of the topic so it was interesting to read your thoughts about it.
